“Comfortable Rooms and Great Location, but Service Needs Improvement”
We are Filipino travellers (a married couple) who stayed at Swiss Belhotel for 3 nights during our holiday in Makassar City earlier this month (to celebrate an early Valentine's Date). We booked through Agoda, our go-to platform for accommodations. The room itself was elegant, spacious, and very comfortable, with clean bedding, soft pillows, air conditioning, wifi, and a great view of Makassar City. Comfort and cleanliness were the best parts of our stay. The location is convenient, very close to Pantai Losari and Fort Rotterdam, in a safe neighborhood with easy access to local attractions and restaurants. However, we were extremely disappointed with the service at this hotel, particularly from the staff, including those at reception. They seemed eager to end or cut short conversations, especially when we called over the phone, which we believe may have been due to the language barrier as we do not speak Indonesian. On the night of check-in, the male receptionist struggled with English, which made the process quite slow. That same night, we encountered an issue with the power plugs in the room, and only one key card was provided and the instructions to photograph it as a backup did not work. We contacted reception, and a technical staff member came to check the plugs but did not explain anything and never returned. It was late, we were unfamiliar with the city, and my husband had to go out to buy an adaptor so I could charge my phone. No assistance was offered from hotel staff. Regarding the key card, we were initially told to take a photo of it, but it did not work, and we were eventually given a spare card. On the second day, the room service staff we met on the 21st floor was friendly and smiling, but when we requested our room to be cleaned while we were out (even leaving the "clean room" sign), it was not attended to. Throughout our stay, whether calling reception, laundry, or the restaurant, most staff either hung up on us or ended conversations abruptly. We were unsure whether this was due to language difficulties, cultural differences, or because we are Filipino, which was upsetting and left us feeling unwelcome. Only one staff member, present during check-out at a small table beside reception, treated us politely and professionally. Check-in was slow, but check-out was okay. The room itself was excellent - spacious, clean, quiet, with soft beds and good amenities including TV, wifi, air conditioning, and toiletries. Overall, the room and location were very good, but the poor service - slow responses, communication barriers, ignored requests, and lack of support with simple issues - made our stay quite frustrating. Service is a major part of the hospitality experience, and unfortunately, this hotel did not meet that standard for us. For international guests or those who do not speak Indonesian, we recommend caution. While the comfort of the room was a highlight, we would likely choose another hotel with better service if we return to Makassar.
