Where to stay in Matara District
Matara District hotels & accommodations

Both Agoda and Weligama deserve the biggest thanks for adjusting our non-refundable booking owing to a family emergency during the original dates. We had requested the closest villa to the beach and the closest villa is what we got despite the changes made (at no extra cost). We were three girls to one garden villa, which was rather spacious and comfortably suited to a...

This new hotel located on a small strip of Weligama beach is a wonderful little slice of paradise. Located just minutes from the Weligama train station by tuk tuk, it is a welcome calm after visiting the storm that is Colombo. The staff do their very best to ensure your comfort and enjoyment. Amelia, who works in guest relations, was very cordial and gave excellent adv...

Fabulous property on an unspoiled and practically deserted beach. There are 4 villas with spacious and well appointed suites and a small pantry area where you can make your own tea and coffee. There are also kettles in the rooms. Wonderful 40 m infinity pool looking right out to the beach, which was great because the sea was sometimes a bit too rough to swim in. Lov...

We had a very nice stay here. I can highly recommend this hotel to anyone. Staff is very helpful, location is great, although the hotel is in Matara/Polhena and not in Mirissa, which is a 10 min drive away. But this is not a problem. Only negative point is, that the food in the restaurant is quite pricey.

We stayed at Imagine last August and again this year and would still definitely stay there again. the location is great, between Weligama and Matara, very close to Mirissa beach and is absolute beach front. The rooms are spacious, modern and clean. The bed was so comfy. The pool is lovely and gets cleaned daily, by a very caring pool guy. Breakfast is the best you will...

I could not recommend this place any higher. The staff were outstanding- were quick to assist and were extremely friendly. It was evident that the staff really care about your stay and want you to enjoy it. T, the butler, spoke outstanding English and was extremely friendly and knowledgable. He had the perfect balance in his service for us to fully enjoy our stay. Th...

It was a short but perfect stay. The hotel only has 6 rooms, but over 10 staff, their services are excellent. The private beach with white sand and palm tree is just outside the hotel, the best beach I have been in the west coast. There is only one restaurant but the chef is a star - best lobster I have ever had. It is a surprise given its size that the hotel has a nic...

No1 Mirissa is a new, stylish and upmarket boutique hotel/guest house perched on the rocks at the end of Marissa Beach. The location is fantastic with lovely views along the palm trees and down to the surfers in the water. We stayed there after moving on early from the very disappointing Talalla Retreat. The design of the rooms is comfortable and elegant, with lots...

Location - Twenty Two is roughly a 30 sec walk from the beach. Bang in the centre of Weligama. Perfect location to visit Mirissa and Galle. Rooms - Amazing ocean facing rooms ! Since tourism has taken a hit, some of the premium rooms were available at lesser prices. We took a chance and had a magnificent room booked. Spacious, balcony, overlooking the pool and the oce...

This counts as one of the best Villas I’ve ever stayed at. Often the pictures are an exaggeration of the beauty of a location, but not on this occasion. The place is sublime. An absolute perfect location just ½ mile from Weligama. There are only 8 villas and we stayed in Samaya on the first floor. A large villa for 2 persons. The views across the bay were amazing...

Great hotel, very clean, large room with windows that brighten the room. Bathroom is large and very nice. Bed was large and had a firmer matress. Hotel equipped with Hot and cold showers, mini fridge, pool, and good air con. hotel staff was helpful, and very polite. breakfast was basic, but plentiful. The location of the hotel was fantastic especially for families. Th...

This was the best two nights we had in Sri Lanka. It is so tucked away from the beaches and tourists. We thoroughly enjoyed the privacy and exclusiveness this hotel had to offer. We also appreciate the architecture of the building and those tasteful art pieces around the place. The bungalow would be a bit awkward in terms of location and of course the main house has th...

Booked a large bed room but ended up with a luxe category with twin beds For a family with an infant we were looking for a larger bed and we have never wanted a twin bedroom anyways I found this agoda booking to be of all things wrong The hotel was perfect and I’m glad I booked for 3days Staff in particular was the highlight here Anique and Kamanthi was two of the ...

A soon as we arrived the Manager (Kanal) was awesome, so friendly & helping us by keeping us cool ( due to the heat) by offering drinks & letting us sit in his office to cool down until our room was ready. They let us check in early you wont find many hotels that you let you do this. The rooms are specious & very clean the wifi works fantastically.Couldn't fault the ro...

Friendliest, kindest, and best staff in Sri Lanka. Check-in and check-out was very swift, and the staff knew our names when they welcomed us. The room was very clean and it was as the picture that was posted on the website. The price was very affordable. Brizo's location is right across from Marriott Hotel. We will definitely come back. There is a railroad right next t...

Amazing location, great value for money and very good facilities. Staff were very good and polite.. Overall a very satisfying stay. The breakfast was very filling. They helped us arrange a whale watching experience as well and helped us out when the original trip was cancelled due to bad weather even after getting on the boat. They made re-booking the same service (wit...

we travel by car around srilanka for over two weeks staying in many hotels but this one was without the doubt the best one in every aspect. when we arrived we couldn't believed that there is no mistake and it`s the place we booked, we thought that it should have cost double we paid. enormous size, design and cleanness of the room deserve 5 stars, food in their re...

First we came here for couple days. Now we've been here for a week and not hurry to leave yet. Hotel is right next to the beach which is great place to learn surfing. The hotel itself is quite new with simple clean rooms with air-con (if you want to pay little extra). Customer service is excellent which makes you feel safe and comfortable. Hotel has also new swimming ...

This was the best hotel we had during our 3 weeks trip. It is quite new and in fantastic condition. The room and the hotel overall is very clean. The staff is extraordinarily friendly. We did enjoy the great infinity pool with the nice view to the countryside. Hotel offers food during fixed time slots otherwise nice places in walking distance. We enjoyed Papa Mango ...

My room was absolutely spotless, which is always a good sign, the air con was v. efficient (I had to turn it off at times because it was so good at combatting the heat) and, my personal benchmark, the shower, was brilliant. The staff and owners were all very friendly and quickly made me feel comfortable. The food was simple - but I enjoyed it and ate there on each of m...

Loved our stay at Sea Star and Mirissa. The room was spacious and the view was incredible, spotting turtles below in the water. Great place to snorkel out the front, but visibility was poor when we went. The room was good but the ac and tv didnt work when we got there. The staff quickly and efficiently made sure everything worked before they let us settle in. A grea...

The room didn't have air con and no pool but we still thought it was a great place to stay - the balcony and view into the fields was amazing. It's a short walk to the beach and we enjoyed being a little away from the busy beach/street area. Really helpful in booking a whale watching tour, massages and tuk tuk to Matara for us, which was perfect! Breakfast was great an...

We absolutely loved D Canal. The house is beautifully appointed and set in stunning tropical gardens. There are regular visits from wildlife including peacocks, monkeys, mongoose and kingfishers. Breakfast is fabulous and the free tuk tuk transfers to the main road is a great touch. We had such a relaxing stay at D Canal. I could move in! Would highly recommend to oth...

This place was one if the most memorable. The location is literally next to the jungle. The facilitues were clean and modern, the pool a wonderful experience after a long hike in the forrest. We had a lovely 2 nights at the boutique hotel at the end of our trip. The hotel is quite new (only 6 months old when we stayed) with a new wing about to open before December. We stayed with another young family so together we occupied 4 of the then 5 rooms. The hotel is lovely, rooms are extra large with lots of space. They had satellite TV and air con, which was n...
Cheap places to stay in Matara District

This is a great place, where the owners will make you feel like a family member. I had been traveling for quite a while when I arrived there and I had asked many not-so-sommon requests. The guys did all for me with a smile on their face. At the beginning they told me that I could not stay in the room that I booked (6people room) and they put me in this huge 8 people do...

This home is owned by an old couple. They are too friend and make amazing breakfast. The room is spacy and they have a powerful fan to keep you cool during the night. The location is great, just north of the main touristic part of Mirissa. I would come back.

We only stayed at Nature Inn for one night, but we enjoyed our stay very much! Pradeep and his family were so friendly and helpful, and even provided us with a free New Year's Day breakfast. The room was clean and not too small. The bathroom was separate from the room, though, but this did not bother us. Pradeep drove us to Matara on the day we left, so Nature Inn is r...

Thanks very much to the owner and his wife for all their hospitality, friendliness and help. Also tasty dinners, first class service! Room was clean, big and comfy as well as whole house. Wee terrace outside you could chat with other co- guests, if you wished to All area is so beautiful and renting a motorbike or getting around with tuk tuk, not a problem. We only boo...

Bed is comfortable, shared bathroom is clean. Overall a really good deal for the price. Best part was the woman who runs it - she was unbelievably kind and generous. She kept giving us desserts and little treats that she made herself. The breakfasts (included) were big and tasty. I loved the coconut roti. Everything is a short walk away. I really liked this place :) T...

I stayed in the one bedroomed apartment for two days. This is more of a homestay than hotel, though you have a separate private apartment. The family that owns the apartment were brilliant. The value for money excellent and the apartment perfect fro my needs.

About a 20min walk from main railway station and main bus station and town centre slightly off the beaten track but nice clean rooms and bathroom. Mosquito net provided but no a/c so the room can get very hot even with the fan on full. A bit hard to find as there is no sign on the outside so I had to ask around the neighbours. Friendly hosts with a nice little dog. Han...

First the good: very, very friendly family running the place. Even rode his bike out to meet me and help me get to the house as the Agoda GPS point is in the wrong place. Offered me tea/coffee upon check in and check out. Room was very clean as was the attached bathroom. The room also had a fan, mosquito net, clothes drying/hanging rack, and a small mirror. The bad po...

Stayed here for 2 nights, just enjoying the nearby beach. The staff was very friendly, the food served was very delicious. The staff was very helpful to us, it was raining when we had to leave to the next place, and they drove us in their tuktuk to Mirissa for a very reasonable price, we had a lot of trouble finding the place, but the driver was trying really hard to a...

We had the best 3 days at this place. A small hotel runned by a lovely local family. 3 delicate rooms with stunning paddy field view. Mirissa Beach is just a few minutters away in tuktuk - the owner arranged tuktuk for 1.25 dollar each way. Best breakfast in Sri Lanka so far and we even got afternoon tea everyday. We really felt at home. Clean, a great night sleep and...

This is the my best living experience in Sri Lanka ! The room is good with a big bed and a nice window ,more than that ,The best thing is the persons .All the family members were very good to me ,Everyone treated me as a member of their family ,I were also very happy to live with them ,the father cooked tasty

Quiet location with lovely gardens, and although not very near the beach (about 4 kilometers away) it is on a regular bus route to and from the beach, and Damith (the owner) has a tuk tuk and was very obliging about running around when needed. This is a very clean house with efficient air con and fans, brand new bathrooms and comfortable beds. Not luxurious, but with e...

the location in Mirissa is excellent. Far enough off the main road that you don't get road noise, and a short walk from the No.1 Roti Shop. The facilities are fine, you get what you pay for. The host came by with some of her fresh mangoes for breakfast on the day of our departure which was lovely.

We have felt completely at home here with Gihan’s lovely family and the best restaurant in Sri Lanka. We were even able to learn how to cook curry Sri Lanka style with Thanuja, using ingredients from their Aryuvedic garden. Gihan organized our trips into the Sinharaja Rainforest, teeming with diverse flora and fauna, a keen ornithologist he can identify any of the 147 ...

What a lovely stay. Such a bargin for the money. We had our own apartment and balcony. Tea and bananas on arival. Fantastic breakfast included. Scooter hire avalible. Good wifi connection. The room was clean and spacious. It is located between the beach and the main road (bus stop). Hostel owner arranged my whale watching tour, dinner and breakfast. I love the Kottu roti that they got for me for dinner. He also suggested the snake farm tour (very interesting) which I went to instead of the Traditional fishermen. There was no wifi in the room so I went to...

I loved being in Midigama but this is a little far away from the beach and the main street where the food is so at night its a little difficult. The staff are nice but it wasn't the most clean, average facilities. There is a charm and nice yoga atmosphere though so if you're looking to get away from the noise its quite nice. Wifi is only available in the front room.

Had a great stay here. Rooms are perfect for the price. Comfortable and clean bedroom and bathroom. Straight over the road is a couple of good reef breaks. Family were super friendly and helpful. They even invited me into their living room to watch the nightlty Sri Lanka soap operas. Overall excellent value for money and a great insight into Sri Lanka family life.

This was a wonderful experience. Very special though so not suitable for the Hilton and Marriott lovers who likes the predictable experience. This hotel is AMAZING, but! not so easy to access. You have to travel a 12km mountain road to reach it so I would highly recommend that tourists hire a local taxi to get there. But once you are there, you are as close to paradise ...

We ended our trip in Sri Lanka here, and it was the best place we think either of us have ever stayed. Shazan was wonderful all day, serving us breakfast, lunch and dinner, even if we hadn't pre-ordered. All the food was incredibly tasty - especially the...

We really enjoyed our stay here. Very nice room with cold AC and good WiFi . The staff were very nice and welcoming. We LOVED our time at Kadolana Guest House and extended our stay from originally one night to four nights. So pack your bags and get ready to experience the allure of Matara, where every moment is infused with the beauty of Sri Lanka.
When to Experience Matara's Magic
Timing your visit to Matara can significantly enhance your experience. The best time to explore this coastal paradise is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to March. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, warm temperatures, and calm seas, ideal for beach activities and outdoor adventures. This is also the peak tourist season, so be prepared for a lively atmosphere filled with fellow travelers and locals enjoying the sun.
Another exciting time to visit Matara is during the local festivals, which are rich in culture and tradition. The Esala Perahera, celebrated in July or August, is one such event that showcases elaborate processions featuring beautifully adorned elephants, traditional dancers, and musicians. Participating in these festivities offers a unique glimpse into the local way of life and the vibrant culture that defines Matara.
For those who prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April to June or September to November. While the weather may be slightly less predictable, you can enjoy fewer crowds and often find better deals on accommodations. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Matara's charm and beauty are sure to leave a lasting impression.
Essential Travel Tips for Matara Adventures
To make the most of your time in Matara, it's helpful to know a few insider tips that can enhance your travel experience. First, familiarize yourself with the local transportation options. Taxis and tuk-tuks are readily available and provide a convenient way to navigate the town. For a more local experience, consider renting a bicycle or scooter to explore at your own pace. The flat terrain and scenic routes make cycling a popular choice among travelers.
Understanding local customs can also enrich your visit. Sri Lankans are known for their hospitality, so don’t hesitate to greet locals with a friendly smile or a simple "Ayubowan" (hello). When visiting religious sites, dress modestly and be respectful of local traditions. For instance, it’s customary to remove your shoes before entering temples, so be prepared to walk barefoot on the cool stone floors.
Lastly, stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun, especially during outdoor activities. The tropical climate can be quite warm, so carry a reusable water bottle and apply sunscreen regularly.
