“It was a cost-effective and tranquil hidden gem of an accommodation.”

I thought I wanted to go somewhere nearby for the last trip of summer vacation, and while searching, I happened to find this place. My main focus was the outdoor bath with “cloudy hot spring” water, which I love. The photos and reviews of the bath online were good, so I went with high expectations, but the large communal bath in the main building was quite small—barely able to fit four adult men. The outdoor bath, which has alternating times for men and women, was disappointingly small, barely fitting one adult man. However, the bath in the annex (Sakuratei) was also available, featuring the "cloudy hot spring" water with both an indoor and outdoor bath that had a decent size, and I was very satisfied since it was open 24 hours. That said, compared to other onsen ryokans I’ve been to, the baths were somewhat smaller. The free family bath (which only has an indoor bath) was also available for use if it was free, and this was a really nice service. The inn itself didn't seem very large, and combined with it being a weekday, I was able to relax in the baths without any crowd even though I went in three times. I managed to try all the baths, and the water was at a comfortable temperature, allowing for a long soak, which was nice. The cloudiness wasn't very strong, and I could faintly see the bottom of the tub; if you expect a milky opacity, you might be disappointed. The dining area was partitioned into rooms for banquets, which made it quiet and pleasant. Although I felt the meal could have had a bit more volume, each dish had a thoughtful twist and tasted great. All the staff were pleasant, polite, and attentive, making for a very enjoyable stay. Overall, I think this was a cozy inn with its facilities and meals. I felt a calm, hidden charm from the entrance and was very satisfied with my experience.

      “Old but lovely.”

It’s good to get used to walking in Japan. We did pay 600 yen from the station to take a taxi up the mountain in the rain. Good call. Lovely staff. A welcome tea, and a labyrinth layout, with old indoor and outdoor hot baths, a free massage chair, water and ice, vending machines, and great Japanese-style dinners and breakfasts. There was only one snaffu- a couple of foreigners neglected to read the sign in the corridor guiding everyone to their respective dining areas. They also couldn’t read my name in English, or our room number, on a large sign at our dinner table, and had already started eating our food. There was a flurry of running around by the excellent staff- we left the area, and organised alternatives with them. They set us up in the downstairs area, and were extremely apologetic giving us free drinks along with ‘sorry, it’s the same dinner as last night.’ We didn’t mind at all! When we checked out, the front of house staff also apologised, and gave us a whole box of the couple of delicious sweets they provide in your room each day. They also drove us back down to the station. If you want a clean, perfectly modern place- this is not it. If you don’t mind a place that shows its age, but is in an amazing location, with so much to see and do, and is run by people with heart- this is totally it.

      “Amazing forest ryokan experience ”

This was our first onsen and we had a lovely time. The staff were the best and super accommodating to our needs, Especially our chef / host who was able to swap out a meal quickly for my partner who couldn’t eat pork. We had a Japanese style bedroom with a relaxing view of the trees and bamboos. The outdoor onsen was so relaxing accompanied by great hair and skin products offered. We even bought a cleanser from here. The location was also ideal as the hotel offered buses in the morning time to the station. We would highly recommend this stay for anyone staying in Hakone.

      “Exceptional”

Authentic ryokan experience in Hokone. Great room with comfortable futons and fluffy duvets. Loved the onsen experience and great touch to have a private one which we could use as a family. Incredible 12 course dinner in a private room and loved the effort made to tailor the food for our 12 year old daughter. You need to take a taxi from the station as a very steep climb and they didn’t want to store luggage but kindly gave us a lift to the station which had lockers. It was a fabulous end to our 2 weeks in Japan, very relaxing and authentic overall.

      “It was a good vacation.”

I think the price is quite reasonable. (Is it really this cheap for breakfast and dinner included? It's that cheap!) And the meals were undeniably satisfying, exceeding my expectations. The staff was very friendly and guided me to my room while introducing the facilities. The room is very clean and spacious. There are two hot springs plus an open-air bath, all of which were incredibly pleasant. The location is a bit inconvenient, as it is a fair distance from Gora Station and the Hakone Tozan Cable Car's Koen-Kami Station (there is a slope involved). Since there are no convenience stores nearby, it's best to buy snacks and drinks before getting on the Hakone Tozan train or at the convenience store near the Sculpture Museum Station. Occasionally, there may be insects in the rooms or hallways.
